What are the uses of diesel generator sets?


  Diesel generator sets are a type of power generation equipment. Their principle is to burn diesel fuel in an engine, converting thermal energy into mechanical energy. The engine's rotation then drives a generator to cut the magnetic field, ultimately generating electricity. Its uses are mainly in the following five areas:
 
  First, self-sufficient power supply. Some electricity users lack grid power, such as islands far from the mainland, remote pastoral areas, rural areas, military camps, work stations, and radar stations in deserts and plateaus. They need to have a self-sufficient power supply. This refers to a self-generated and self-used power supply. When the power generation capacity is not too large, diesel generator sets often become the first choice for self-sufficient power supplies.
 
  Second, backup power supply. The main use is that some electricity users, while having a relatively stable and reliable grid power supply, still configure a backup power supply to prevent accidents such as circuit failures or temporary power outages. Electricity users generally have high requirements for power supply security; even a second of power outage is unacceptable. Emergency power generation must replace the grid power supply the moment it stops, otherwise, it will cause significant losses. These units include some traditional high-power security units, such as hospitals, mines, power plant security power supplies, and factories using electric heating equipment. In recent years, network power supplies have become a new growth point for backup power supply demand, such as telecommunications operators, banks, airports, command centers, databases, highways, high-grade hotels and office buildings, and high-end catering and entertainment venues. Due to the use of network management, these units are increasingly becoming the main users of backup power supplies.
 
  Third, alternative power supply. The role of an alternative power supply is to make up for the insufficient grid power supply. There may be two situations: one is that the grid electricity price is too high, so diesel generators are chosen as an alternative power supply to save costs; the other is that when the grid power supply is insufficient, the use of grid electricity is restricted, and the power supply department has no choice but to implement power rationing. In this case, electricity users need an alternative power supply to maintain normal production and work. Several periods of hot sales of diesel generator sets in China in recent years, such as the nationwide hot sales in the first half of the 1980s, the hot sales in South China in the early 1990s, and the hot sales in East China in 2003-2004, were all caused by national and regional power shortages. To cope with large-scale power rationing, various electricity users purchased diesel generator sets as alternative power supplies.
 
  Fourth, mobile power supply. A mobile power supply is a power generation facility that does not have a fixed location and is moved around. Diesel generator sets, due to their lightweight, flexible, and easy-to-operate characteristics, have become the first choice for mobile power supplies. Mobile power supplies are generally designed as power vehicles, including self-propelled power vehicles and trailer power vehicles. Electricity users using mobile power supplies mostly have mobile work characteristics, such as oil fields, geological exploration, field engineering exploration and adventure, camping, mobile command posts, trains, ships, and power compartments (warehouses) of freight containers, as well as mobile weapon equipment power supplies for the military. Some mobile power supplies also have emergency power supply properties, such as emergency power supply vehicles for urban power supply departments, and engineering rescue vehicles and repair vehicles for water and gas supply departments.
 
  Fifth, fire-fighting power supply. Fire-fighting generator sets are mainly power supplies for building fire-fighting equipment. Once a fire occurs, the city power is cut off, and the generator set becomes the power source for fire-fighting equipment. With the widespread implementation of fire safety regulations, the domestic real estate fire-fighting power supply market will have enormous potential for development.
 
  It can be seen that the above four uses of diesel generator sets have emerged in response to different stages of social development. Among them, self-sufficient power supplies and alternative power supplies are due to the backwardness of power supply facilities or insufficient power supply capacity, representing the market demand focus in the early stages of socio-economic development. Backup power supplies and mobile power supplies are due to the increasing demand for power supply security and the continuous expansion of the power supply range, representing the market demand focus in the advanced stages of socio-economic development. Therefore, from the perspective of social development, the use of diesel generator sets as self-sufficient and alternative power supplies is a transitional use, while their use as backup and mobile power supplies is a long-term use. In particular, fire-fighting power supplies, as a market with huge potential, will gradually be released.
 
  As power generation equipment, diesel generator sets have some unique advantages: ① Relatively small size, flexible and convenient, easy to move. ② Easy to operate and control. ③ Widely available energy sources (fuel). ④ Relatively low initial investment. ⑤ Quick start, allowing for quick power supply and shutdown. ⑥ Stable power supply, and power supply quality can be improved through technological improvements. ⑦ Direct point-to-point power supply to the load. ⑧ Less affected by various natural climates and geographical environments, allowing for all-weather power generation.
 
  Because of these advantages, diesel generator sets are considered the best form of backup and emergency power supply. Currently, although there are many other ways to solve backup and emergency power supply problems, such as UPS and dual-circuit power supply, they cannot replace the role of diesel generator sets. Besides the price factor, this is mainly because the reliability of diesel generator sets as backup and emergency power supplies is higher than that of UPS and dual-circuit power supplies.
